Episode Recap and Wrap Up

In this episode of success talks Mike Staver, CEO of the Staver Group shared his perspectives and insights on the importance of coaching and mentoring others. Mike serves as a coach to thousands of people each year. Called a "Rebel with a Cause," he resists conventional wisdom, canned solutions and tired clichés, instead pushing you to look at your life and organization in revolutionary ways. Edgy, opinionated, sometimes controversial and always truthful, you can count on not hearing what you want to hear from Mike. Be prepared to be pushed to grow, pushed to embrace counter-intuitive thinking, pushed to get comfortable with discomfort and, most importantly, pushed to achieve maximum results.

Some of Mike's key insights:
  • Potential is canned or bottled opportunity & good leadership is the extent to which you can influence another person to achieve results beyond which they think they are currently capable of.
  • In coaching the primary responsibility of moving potential to performance rest in the choices that the person being coached makes.
  • The role of a coach is to illuminate and suggest. You cannot control or change another person, you can only influence.
  • Coaching is not an event; it is a process of influence that has the opportunity of creating culture within the organization.
Mike defined what it takes to be a great coach & how to make every coaching session effective:
  • Trust the process
  • Be curious
  • Remain neutral
  • Be free from bias but grounded in belief
  • Be coachable yourself
Mike also gave examples of common coaching mistakes & how to overcome them:
  • Being in a hurry
  • Too much tell, not enough ask
  • Too much ask, not enough tell
  • Being afraid of making the client mad
  • Too invested in the outcome
  • Not trusting your gut

Be sure to tune in for Mike's next event: Leading Courageously; Building High Performance Teams on November 2nd at 12:00 pm CST.
