All great leaders share one thing in common: They understand that effective, results-producing communication is equal parts speaking and listening.

Meet Kathleen Wood. As a nationally recognized growth strategist, motivational speaker and author, she knows a thing or two about the equation of good communication. This business leader is joined us for the November episode of Success Talks during which she shared holistic techniques for achieving effective communication.

Participants obtained specific pointers surrounding the WFF Core Competency of Communicating and Listening, including how to:

  • Identify their communication style.
  • Play to the strengths of their communication style in a variety of business scenarios.
  • Avoiding self-sabotage through easy speaking reminders.
  • Use effective communication to build better interpersonal relationships and achieve higher productivity.

“Being heard starts before the meeting does.” – Kathleen Wood

When a leader can effectively leverage communication, they make an impact. There are key characteristics of people who are leaders, and Kathleen identified four places where effective leaders can be found demonstrating these characteristics. She referred to them as the “High C’s” which allow which allow leaders to communicate with impact:

  • The Board Room – leaders speaking in board rooms typically have high CONFIDENCE and COMPETENCE. These characteristics appeal to others assembled;
  • The Conference Room – leaders in conference rooms generally include executives and mid-level managers in an organization. They typically possess CLARITY and CONSISTENCY in their message;
  • The Chat Room – GEN X and Y individuals convene in chat rooms. The power in their communication comes via their ability to COLLABORATE with others and dig into the CONTEXT of messages;
  • The Classroom – these future leaders have the COURAGE to speak.

Another key observation presented by Kathleen was that communication today is no longer linear. The tools and methods for communicating have grown exponentially over the past 10 years. We live in a world which is bombarded with information. Connecting with others is more complex than ever before.

What’s the best way to communicate without getting derailed by current day methods such as iPhone, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube? Connecting! Great communicators are great connectors. Connectivity and impactful communication go hand-in-hand.

Lastly, it is crucial to understand your communication style and identify which style allows you to communicate with impact. Everyone has a different style which is unique to them. Mimicking someone else’s style may not work, but refining and perfect the style which works best for you is sure to get your voice heard!

Key takeaways when communicating:

  • Embrace self worth – stop apologizing!
  • Embody self confidence – don’t ask permission;
  • Be assertive and direct – not aggressive;
  • Be a contributor – not a duplicator;
  • Show passion – avoid being emotional;
  • Concise messages are heard – wordy messages attracts interruptions

These are just a few helpful communication strategies for you to try. Practice implementing them the next time you communicate with others, and you’ll be able to “Power Up” your voice and be heard!
