Episode Recap and Wrap Up

Why do people avoid networking?
The top three reasons are emotional responses of trepidation, which are normal and can actually be leveraged to your advantage. Reasons 4-10 are attitudinal and can be hinder your efforts. If you understand what challenges you, you can focus your energy and attention to be more effective.

  1. Fear of rejection, but rejection is actually very unlikely
  2. Being shy puts you in the majority as 60% of individuals in the room would agree.
  3. Overwhelming – this is a byproduct of the first two
  4. - 10. It’s schmoozing, manipulative, selling yourself, politics; I have enough friends

Five Pillars of an Effective Network
Target 5 individuals in each area to build a strong network of 25.

  1. Professional: Seek aspirational connections, at your level or above, who can move you to the next level.
  2. Net Worth: Seek individuals with high net worth to power you up.
  3. Support: Identify the people that you count on to support you.
  4. Resources: Individuals, organizations, or groups that act as a resource to you … like the Women’s Foodservice Forum.
  5. Core: The pillar of strength; these are the people who unconditionally want for you to be successful through non-judgmental support.
