Episode Recap and Wrap Up

In this webinar, Christina spoke to:

  • Defining strategic behaviors
  • Scanning the environment
  • Leveraging key organizational relationships
  • Executing your strategy

Evolving from a tactical manager to a strategic leader requires first examining the scope of your current role to identify opportunities where you could apply different disciplines to how you approach your workday(s) i.e. replacing time with thinking and planning vs. actually doing tasks.

Staying current is also critical as you continue to move up within your organization. How do you ‘scan your environment’ internally and externally in order to be relevant?

InternallyExternally
Company LiteratureProfessional conferences
Annual Reports/Board MinutesWebsites
Managing Key RelationshipsNewspapers/trade journals
Budget- where are $$ being spentOut of company/industry networking

Understanding the power of a network built with key people can help you stimulate new ideas, share information and give you access to different perspectives. It can also help you align your strategic thinking to organizational goals/objectives that will enable you to execute your strategies. You may ask:

  • What are my company’s core values?
  • How does my strategic thinking support those values?
  • What should we be thinking about that we are not?
  • How will my ideas help the organization survive and prosper?
  • What will I do to help with the implementation of my strategic ideas?

Here are some ideas of how you may get started:

  • Set personal goals / objectives
  • Establish time for yourself to focus (free of distractions)
  • Enlist the support of a colleague for accountability
  • Utilize technology to support your efforts (schedule appointments with yourself, register for electronic news alerts etc)
